MCS 4K dad and musician, Dave, came to visit music class today. Dave shared his love of music and playing the electric guitar with the 4K students. They heard the different sounds the electric guitar can make and they got to help strum the guitar. It was a very fun day!

Today world renowned Oaxacan Woodcarvers, Armando Jimenez and Alejandro Jimenez visited the students at MCS. With the help of former SPSD teacher Laurie Martin as their interpreter they taught us the history of their art, how it is made and what it means. Students asked excellent questions and were wowed by the unique and colorful sculptures called alebrijes, which means fantastical in Spanish. The artists will be visiting other Sauk Prairie School District schools, giving presentations and demonstrations to showcase their art for students throughout this week. You can meet them and purchase their remaining stock at the Grand Avenue theater on Friday, April 19 from 3:30-4:30. #TogetherWeSoar #SPSD #Artrocks

Before the rain yesterday, students over-seeded the school prairie with seeds they collected last fall from native grasses and flowers! This will improve the ecosystem and is part of ongoing restoration efforts.

Nurse Jamie came to visit MCS 4K to talk about germs. They listened to a story and did a hand washing experiment. Students were given "germ lotion" to rub on their hands. They saw how it glowed under Nurse Jamie's magic germ light. The students then washed their hands and checked with the germ light to see how they did washing the germs off. Everyone needed to go back and wash again! Now the 4K students are excellent hand washers.

Merrimac students studied the eclipse in grades 4K-5 and were awestruck by the opportunity to view it together today! #MCS #SPSD #Merrimac #togetherwesoar

One School One Book is back! Students, classes, and families will all read about Humphrey to build a culture of reading! A big thank you to Animal House Pet Supplies in Sauk City for helping us bring Humphrey to MCS!

On Tuesday, 3rd grade World Helpers presented what they learned about recycling and shared reusable and fully compostable baggies. Each student will take one home to try!

Before break, students helped our school forest by removing the egg sacs of the spongy moth (bad caterpillars that can kill trees). They were excellent at spotting the invasive insects. Way to be conservation kids!

🔨🔨🔨 Learning is LOUD! After measuring and assembling, new bluebird houses are ready for the birds!

Happy National Ag Day! Students are planting seeds indoors now so they'll be ready for the garden! Living necklaces and strawberry plants too!

Second graders at Merrimac Community School enjoyed a special visitor today. Wisconsin's Alice in Dairyland Ashley Hagenow visited classrooms to talk about agriculture and her position promoting Wisconsin's agriculture products and producers.

Can you guess what's under the microscope? Second grade is learning about bacteria and microscopic organisms! Answers in the comments.

This morning our 4th graders took the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), also known as our "Nation's Report Card." This test is given to randomly selected schools in grades 4, 8 and 12 throughout our nation biannually. We are so proud of how seriously they took this and how much they worked to show what they know. Students were assigned to complete either a math or reading assessment. Afterwards they shared that they enjoyed it and really liked the testing format, especially using a stylus with the device that was provided by the proctors. The cool free earbuds were a hit as well! If you see one of these hard working students today thank them for sharing what they have learned at MCS in the SPSD so far! #MCS #SPSD #togetherwesoar

Taking a March #FirstDayHike to end the week. Students noticed how flattened most of the prairie plants were from wind and snow, but one stood tall with exploding seeds. They named it Fireworks Grass.

Superintendent Wright challenged MCS students to get hopping to commemorate Leap Day 2024! Students put the pogo sticks through their paces and also had a chance to measure how far they could "leap" under their own power. There were some impressive jump distances (many at six feet!) and number of bounds on the pogo sticks achieved by all ages! Together we truly did soar! Fourth graders and staff helped to measure and collect the data. # MCS #Togetherwesoar #SPSD #Merrimac

Syrup on pancakes and maple candy made a tasty ending to our spring sap project! Students tapped, collected, graphed, boiled, and enjoyed the maple sap. Learning is delicious!

Early bird gets the... clean house! Students cleaned out old nests so bluebirds can move in as they return this spring!
