MCS 4K students had a fantastic week talking about shapes. They talked about the shapes found on a construction site and were able to hold a brick from the 1850's. Shapes are everywhere!
And they’re off! 👟 The Merrimac Milers held their first practice yesterday, with Coach Bell leading the team through warm-ups.

Our new composting system is worm-tastic! Thank you to a grant from Let's Go Compost, our kindergarten and fifth graders are teaming up with our new worm farm. We are learning about compost and seeing which fruits and veggies the worms like best!

It's pickle time! Students in grade 2 harvested the cucumbers they planted last spring to make pickles! So good, they had seconds!
Z is for Zucchini! The kindergarten class visited the garden and picked zucchini for making bread. They planted the seeds last spring in 4K and were excited to harvest! #SeedsToSnacks #AgInTheClassroom

A is for Apple! 🍎 🍏 Students are picking apples from the school orchard for cider making and cooking time! A project that started growing 20 years ago is bearing lots of fruit!

This was a week of firsts for many 4K students at MCS - first time writing their name, first time cutting with scissors, first time mixing colors to make new colors. Their brains are constantly taking in new experiences!
Students are harvesting the vegetables they planted in the spring and making fresh, healthy snacks! Grade three chopped and stirred up some salsa! Yum! Full-circle learning!

An excellent morning show at Zona Gale Theater Culver's Stage in Portage followed by a nature hike at John Muir Park! A fantastic first field trip for grades 3-5!
In between rain showers on Friday, grades 1 and 2 released more monarch butterflies! Both classrooms are observing monarch caterpillars in science class. ❤️🐛
Even with the rainy days, it was sunshine and smiles the first week in 4K at MCS!

Our open house for families is Thursday, August 27th from 2-6pm. Meet the teachers, take your school photo, and get ready for the first day! The 4K meeting starts at 5:30pm. See you there!
Outdoor work is underway! The swings and trees damaged in the big storm are being removed to make way for new! The garden is getting growing as the beds are weeded and mulched to start the summer. Stay tuned!
4K is getting ready to set sail for Kindergarten! MCS 4K students learned about the ferry this week. They enjoyed an ice cream treat from Mr. Adam, rode on the ferry, and had a great time creating pirate hats with our high school intern.
What do The Alamo and our school sheep have in common? Wool! Some of our wool from the shearing field trip today will be donated to The Alamo (yes, THE Alamo)) for use in their historic demonstrations!
Students also released the 52 rainbow trout we've been raising since January. Big day! Great trip!
A big thank you to Buttermilk Barn for donating gorgeous flowers! Students are making the village beautiful all summer by filling the planters along the highway with the blooming plants. Community service helps everyone grow!
A field trip for the history books! Old World Wisconsin brought the 1800's to life for grades 2 and 3! Students were excited to donate the wool from our school sheep to their living history demonstrations.
